2020-21 Athletics Awards Summary: Wednesday, May 26

ELMIRA, N.Y. — Awards week continued on social media Wednesday afternoon, as the Elmira College Department of Athletics unveiled another round of winners on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

For the second year in a row, awards will be revealed virtually rather than an in-person presentation. Despite the challenges, such as squeezing all three sports seasons into a condensed three-and-a-half-month window between February and May, playing the majority of games without fans in the stands, and a strict COVID-19 testing policy, the crowning of the 2020-21 honorees marks the 51st annual celebration hosted by the Department of Athletics. As tradition goes, the best and brightest will once again be commemorated for their achievements in the classroom and competition.

Winners will be revealed via social media on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter throughout the afternoon and evening. At the conclusion of each day’s announcements, fans, friends, and family can visit athletics.elmira.edu for a recap of the daily awards.

Today, EC announced released a bevy of individual award winners, headlined by the Lowman Award, Wayne Moschetti ’73 Memorial Award, Margaret Locke Citizenship Award, and the Ellen Gibbs Matson Athletic Award. Booster Club Players of the Year from the winter varsity sports were also announced.

A starting outfielder for the EC softball team and the fourth all-time leading scorer for the field hockey program, Janie Kempf ’21 was crowned the 2020-21 Lowman Award winner. The Lowman Award is presented to an upper-class student in good academic standing, whose personality, character, organizational, and administrative ability have had a positive impact on the athletics and recreational programs. In addition to her role as SAAC Vice President, Kempf is the social media manager and graphic designer for the field hockey program.
The Wayne Moschetti ’73 Memorial Award is presented to a member of the junior class that exemplifies the quality of spirit, character, and academic achievement as Wayne Moschetti ’73. This year’s recipient, baseball outfielder Colin McLaughlin ’22, received a Merit Award to recognize his academic success and supports numerous varsity programs as a public address announcer when not in season. On the diamond, he had a breakout season and earned Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team accolades.

Margaret Locke Citizenship Award: Farrah Fiacco ’21

The Margaret Locke Citizenship Award is presented to an upper-class student-athlete who demonstrates participation, especially leadership, or other outstanding qualities in campus activities and volunteer community service. Although the women’s wrestling program had its inaugural season put on hold due to COVID-19, Farrah Fiacco ’21 made the most of her time at Elmira College. Fiacco has volunteered to help local community members complete their taxes through the Southern Tier CA$H Program, reads books to children at her local library during the summer, is a peer tutor on campus, and participates in numerous other campus organizations.

The Ellen Gibbs Matson Athletic Award is an endowed award presented to a graduating student-athlete whose athletic eligibility has expired and who has shown, in action, Ellen’s leadership, joy of life, and commitment to Elmira College. Lydia Milligan ’21 concluded her collegiate career this spring by helping the EC women’s volleyball team reach the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament for the second year in a row. Milligan, an E8 All-Conference Second Team honoree, boasts a 3.9 career GPA and is a member of the Elmira College Dance Marathon, League of Intern Speech Pathologists, and Silent Voices Club.
Cydney Gamido ’21 and the EC cheerleading team turned in a successful performance at the 2021 National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida. Despite being hit with deductions in the preliminary round, the Soaring Eagles scored a 94.23 without a single deduction in the final round. They finished as national runners-up with a two-day average of 93.49.
Men’s Basketball Booster Club Player of the Year: Kyle Kokoskie ’22
One of only two players to start all 11 games during the 2021 season, Kyle Kokoskie ’22 posted career highs in points (6.3) and rebounds (2.3) per game. The third-year point guard also ranked fourth in the Empire 8 Conference with 3.6 assists per game. The Glen Gardner, New Jersey, native reached double figures thrice, including a 10-point, eight-assist performance in the season opener at Nazareth.
Women’s Basketball Booster Club Player of the Year: Alyssa Waters ’22
During Elmira’s six-game abbreviated season, junior guard Alyssa Waters ’22 logged 8.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. She produced double-digit points in three consecutive games, two of which resulted in victories over Wells. In the first half of the home-and-home series, a 57-33 win, Waters scored 13 points with a season-best eight rebounds and six assists. In a 60-25 victory over the Express the following afternoon, she amassed 10 points, six dimes, and five boards.

In the semifinal round against top-seeded Utica, Janzen made a career-high 62 saves, leading the Soaring Eagles to a 2-1 triple-overtime win on the road against the Pioneers.
Women’s Ice Hockey Booster Club Player of the Year: Tristen Tolan ’21
