Flyers, others see a coaching candidate quickly go off the market originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
Bruce Cassidy wasn’t out of a job for long.
His new job won’t be leading the Flyers.
Cassidy, fired by the Bruins just over a week ago, was hired as the Golden Knights’ new head coach Tuesday night.
Vegas’ hiring of Cassidy marks the first shoe to drop in the NHL offseason coaching carousel.
Including the Flyers, there are now six teams with a head coaching vacancy. The Blackhawks, Bruins, Jets, Red Wings and Stars are the other clubs.
More: 12 head coaching candidates for the Flyers
It’s unknown if the Flyers ever had serious interest in Cassidy, who was surprisingly let go by Boston last Monday. Considering the quick Golden Knights-Cassidy courtship, it doesn’t appear there was ever a real spark between the Flyers and the former Bruins bench boss.
With Vegas out of the picture, the Flyers’ chances at landing Barry Trotz do improve a tad if he’s their front-runner. John Tortorella also appears to have interest from the Flyers, among other candidates. More on all of that here.
