Goleniak Notches 100th Career Point as Soaring Eagles Tie Huskies 4-4

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – In a game that saw four different lead changes, the Elmira College women’s ice hockey program rallied to a 4-4 tie while earning the extra point with a 1-0 victory in the shootout on Friday night against the University of Southern Maine Huskies.

TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (6-4-1, 5-1-1 NEHC), Southern Maine (5-3-2, 4-1-2 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Southern Maine opened the scoring just over four minutes into the first period as Saige Macleod found the back of the net. The Soaring Eagles would respond with a goal from Sabrina Shvartsman ’25 at the 13:16 mark to knot the score 1-1.
  • Elmira gained its only lead of the night early in the second period as Annie Audet ’28 riffled a shot from the point to make it 2-1 at the 8:35 mark. Audet’s first collegiate goal would be assisted by Emily Lenzen ’24.
  • The Huskies earned a late power play opportunity in the second period and beat the final buzzer in the frame to knot the score 2-2 at the 19:59 mark. Southern Maine gained a 3-2 advantage just 13 seconds into the third period with a quick goal.
  • The power play for the Soaring Eagles answered with another tying goal at 1:02, as Gabby Dougherty ’26 beat the Huskies’ goalkeeper to make it 3-3. Bri Conger ’27 and Sophie Gregory ’26 provided the assists.
  • Both sides would trade goals later in the period as Elmira used another power play opportunity to pull the score back even. Alayna Toole ’26 proved the equalizer at 11:45 to knot the score 4-4 for the Purple & Gold. Erika Goleniak ’25 provided the primary assist on Toole’s goal and recorded her 100th career point in her 100th career game.
  • Neither side would find the back of the net in the five-minute overtime session, as the game would require a shootout to determine who would get the extra point in the conference standings. Goleniak would notch the only goal of the individual skills competition to secure the extra point for the Soaring Eagles.
