CAPITALS VS. RED WINGS WHAT TO WATCH

From NBC Sports Washington’s J.J. Regan:

“Aliaksei Protas has now played in all four of Washington’s preseason games as he appears to be getting a long look for a spot on the NHL roster. Protas played in 33 games with three goals and six assists last season for the Caps in his rookie season. He is a natural center and played between Mantha and Garnet Hathaway in Columbus, but he can play wing as well and spent much of the 2021-22 season there in the NHL.” Read more

From NBC Sports Washington’s Matt Weyrich

“The story of the [Friday’s] game was Washington’s defense, which limited Detroit to only 19 shots all night. Head coach Peter Laviolette broke up the Capitals’ top blue line pairing of Carlson and Martin Fehervary, lining the former up with Johansen and the latter with Vincent Iorio. Both Johansen and Iorio are hoping to crack Washington’s roster, though spots are limited.” Read more

CAPITALS VS. RED WINGS PLAYERS TO WATCH

Aliaksei Protas, C, Capitals (33 games, 3 goals, 9 points): Given the Caps’ injuries at forward highlighted by center Nicklas Backstrom, a few of Washington’s young players will have a chance to solidify themselves in Peter Laviolette’s rotation. Protas has been active in the preseason and had a strong showing on Saturday against Columbus.

Jakub Vrana, LW, Red Wings (26 games, 13 goals, 19 points): Vrana scored a goal and tallied an assist in Detroit’s preseason win over Chicago on Saturday, so Caps fans could see an old friend make a few plays in this game as well.
