Mikyla Grant-Mentis has become the highest-paid professional women’s hockey player in history after signing a record-breaking deal with the PHF’s Buffalo Beauts.
The one-year contract will pay Grant-Mentis $80,000 USD, which is the equivalent of just over $100,000 CAD.
Grant-Mentis began her PHF career with Buffalo in 2020 following the completion of her four-year NCAA tenure with Merrimack College. Grant-Mentis spent the past two seasons, with the PHF’s Toronto Six where she earned league MVP honors and was named newcomer of the year in 2020-21.
“Buffalo was the team to give me my first opportunity to play in the PHF,†said Grant-Mentis in a Beauts news release, “So choosing to make a professional change to the Buffalo Beauts at this point in my career is an excellent opportunity for me to fine-tune my skills and bring them to an entirely new level on and off the ice.”
Last season, she led the Toronto Six in scoring, collecting 13 goals and 30 points in 19 regular season games. Grant-Mentis has 42 points during her career.
“The opportunity to add such an elite player like [Grant-Mentis] rarely comes along in professional sports,†Beauts GM Nate Oliver said in the team release. “We are extremely excited that she is returning to Buffalo and will be a Beaut once more. There aren’t many athletes who can take over a game the way that [Grant-Mentis] can. She is just a tremendous hockey player who truly loves the game and plays it with a fiery passion. We feel very fortunate that she believes that the Beauts are the right fit for her.â€
The contract comes under the first year of the PHF’s new $750,000 salary cap. The PHF is entering a crucial offseason with the new salary cap, promised expansion, and the looming launch of a PWHPA league in 2023.
