The Boston Bruins have signed one of their top prospects, center Matthew Poitras, to an entry-level contract, the team announced Friday.

It’s a three-year deal with a salary cap hit of $870,000 at the NHL level.

The Bruins selected Poitras with the 54th overall pick (second round) in the 2022 NHL Draft.

The 19-year-old forward took a huge leap in his offensive production during the 2022-23 season. After tallying 50 points (21 goals, 29 assists) in 68 games for the OHL’s Guelph Storm in 2021-22, Poitras posted 95 points (16 goals, 79 assists) over 63 games in 2022-23. His 79 assists were the second-most in the OHL.

Poitras’ vision, playmaking skill and hockey IQ are all quite impressive. He still has plenty of room for development, but it’s possible Poitras could develop into a top-six center in the NHL at some point.

The Bruins have done a poor job drafting and developing centers over the last 10 years, but Poitras has the potential to be a real winner for the franchise.
