The now veteran backstop joined the team this offseason on a one-year, $1 million contract.

He was battling Eric Comrie for the backup job, and ultimately lost the battle. It is likely that Comrie’s familiarity with the team, systems, players and Hellebuyck gave him the inside edge on that No. 2 role behind the league’s reigning Vezina Trophy winner.

On Friday, it was announced that Kahkonen had been claimed by the Colorado Avalanche. He will now remain in the NHL and within the Central Division as a member of the Avalanche.

Winnipeg is no longer responsible for his $1 million contract.
