Ex-Oiler Cam Talbot Breaks NHL Record

by admin

EDMONTON — Last night was a big night.

It was another wake-up call for contending teams like the Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Avalanche. The Oilers succumbed to similar problems plaguing their start last season, such as poor finishing and goaltending. At least one of those has been true for the Avalanche as well.

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Oilers 5-2. The Blackhawks were committed to getting in shooting lanes and collected 35 blocks to prove it. Ultimately, Connor Bedard and company were too much for the Oilers.

Talbot stopped 42 shots for the 32nd shutout of his career. He now joins Sean Burke as the only goalies in NHL history to record a shutout with seven organizations.

He is on his eighth team, having already played for the New York Rangers, Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings, and now the Red Wings. The Flyers are the only team he’s played for for which he didn’t earn a shutout.

Talbot’s best season came when he was a member of the Oilers organization. In 2016-17, he played 73 games, with a record of 42-22-8, a 2.39 goals against average (GAA), and a .919 save percentage (SV). He recorded seven shutouts that year.

He hasn’t hit the heights of that season again, but he’s already off to a solid start with the Red Wings this season.
