A pair of OHL graduates are competing in the 2023 ECHL All-Star Classic set to take place tonight, Monday January 16th in Norfolk, Virginia.
Former Ottawa 67’s and Saginaw Spirit forward Tye Felhaber of the Fort Wayne Komets will suit up for the Western Conference, while former North Bay Battalion forward Mathew Santos of the Maine Mariners will compete for the Eastern Conference.
The 24-year-old Felhaber from Pembroke, Ont. leads Fort Wayne in scoring this season, recording 38 points (9-29–38) over 33 contests. A former second team OHL all-star in 2018-19, Felhaber played five seasons between Saginaw and Ottawa, recording 285 (145-140–285) regular season points. He led the 2019 OHL Playoffs with 17 goals, guiding the 67’s to an Eastern Conference title as he signed an entry-level NHL contract with the Dallas Stars.
A 27-year-old from Etobicoke, Ont., Santos sits third in Maine Mariners scoring with 31 points (12-19–31) through 29 games. Originally joining the Brampton Battalion as an undrafted free agent in 2012, Santos went on to play four seasons with the Troops, recording 127 points (53-74–127) in 251 career regular season games. Following his time in the OHL, Santos played two seasons with Toronto Metropolitan University’s men’s hockey program, racking up 79 points (38-41–79) in 54 games at the U SPORTS level.
Both Felhaber (shooting accuracy) and Santos (hardest shot) will also compete in tonight’s ECHL Skills Competition.
