OHL Conducts Annual General Meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League conducted its Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors this week in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., with some notable developments coming about in the weeks leading into the beginning of training camps and the 2023-24 pre-season.

Key topics throughout the gathering included preparations for the 2024 Memorial Cup that will be held in Saginaw, Michigan, marking the first time an OHL member team will host the Canadian Hockey League’s prestigious national championship since 2017.

Commissioner David Branch oversaw his final Annual Meeting as OHL Commissioner. The league’s Search Committee met for a discussion of next steps in the process to find the next OHL Commissioner. Details will be released soon for individuals to express interest in the position.

OHL recognizes retired Vice President Ted Baker with annual award named in his honour

Beginning in 2023-24, the Ontario Hockey League will recognize one player as the OHL Teammate of the Year, being presented a trophy in honour of Vice President Ted Baker, who retired following the 2022-23 season.This award would recognize the ideal teammate who exemplifies the kind of selfless play, commitment and dedication to his team demonstrated by Ted Baker throughout his 35-year tenure in the Ontario Hockey League.

Ted was joined by wife Joanne and sons Benjamin and Zachary, being presented an artist’s rendition of a teammates sculpture that will be placed prominently atop the Ted Baker Trophy that will be presented to the inaugural Teammate of the Year Award recipient at the OHL Awards ceremony at the Hockey Hall of Fame next summer.

Tim Lukenda elected Chair of the OHL Board of Governors

Soo Greyhounds President and Governor Tim Lukenda is the new Chairman of the OHL Board of Governors, succeeding Saginaw Spirit President and Managing Partner Craig Goslin in the role.

A native of Sault Ste. Marie and the son of late Greyhounds owner Dr. Lou Lukenda, Tim has been a lifelong supporter of the Greyhounds and the Ontario Hockey League. He served as Secretary Treasurer on the OHL Executive Council since 2019 and has been a member of the OHL Board of Governors since 2017.

Lukenda becomes the first representative in Greyhounds history to serve as the OHL’s Chairman of the Board.
