The Vancouver Canucks will look to repeat their success from 23-24 to 24-25, but they still need to add some depth to the defense core. Former Canucks defenseman Travis Dermott could be a cheap option to be the team’s seventh defenseman.

The 27-year-old defenseman played for the Canucks for two seasons from 2021-2023. Injuries derailed his time in Vancouver, and he would only play 28 games for the club.
Dermott was finally healthy for most of last season and played 50 games for the Arizona Coyotes. He scored two goals and five assists. One of his goals came against the Canucks.
Dermott made headlines early in the season for using Pride Tape during the NHL’s ban, which was later changed. His goal against Vancouver was scored during the team’s yearly Pride Night.
Asked Travis Dermott about the significance of scoring on VAN’s Pride Night:
“It’s nice. The Pride stuff obviously meant a lot to me throughout the season so I’m happy to be able to be here on my old team’s Pride Night at their barn, that’s a little something special for me …” pic.twitter.com/67si5rEeIP

From a style of play perspective, Dermott is a solid skater who can make a good breakout pass, something that head coach Rick Tocchet demands from his defense. While he likely won’t be in the top-six defensemen, he could be a perfect extra.
His last contract was for one year at $800K. Given that it is already August in the 2024 offseason, Dermott would likely want a similar contract or maybe accept a PTO offer.
The Canucks brought back Tyler Myers and signed former Edmonton Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais. Nikita Zadorov left for the Boston Bruins, and Ian Cole left, meaning one spot remains to be replaced. Derek Forbort is the front-runner to replace the opening, but Dermott would be a perfect backup plan.
