The Edmonton Oilers made a surprise trade on Sunday, acquiring forward Vasily Podkolzin, the 10th overall pick in the 2019 draft, from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 2025 fourth round pick.
The Oilers appear to be making moves to give themselves options with the decision on the Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway offer sheets pending.
Given Podkolzin’s draft pedigree and the seemingly light return the Canucks received for him we wanted to see what NHL 24 thought of the deal.

When we proposed the deal as Vancouver the Oilers enthusiastically accepted the deal as Podkolzin matched their trade block, but it did put them slightly over the salary cap. We had to ask for Edmonton’s 2026 fourth round pick because they did not have the Ottawa Senators 2025 fourth rounder in-game.
We acquired the Ottawa fourth rounder as Edmonton and attempted to make the deal, which Vancouver denied, saying it was not enough value for Podkolzin.
NHL 24 thinks Edmonton got the better end of this deal, and highlights the cap strain the offer sheets have forced upon the Oilers in real life that lead to this trade.
