Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube continues to be impressed with Nikita Grebenkin

Nikita Grebenkin is making a strong impression on various branches of Toronto Maple Leafs’ management and he further endeared himself during Sunday’s preseason game against the Ottawa Senators.

Grebenkin, who was initially paired on a line with standout camp invite Max Pacioretty and John Tavares, fired up the Scotiabank Arena fans after a spirited fight with Senators forward Adam Gaudette. The 21-year-old hyped up the crowd and evidently, it’s catching his coach’s attention.

“I just said, ‘Great job.’ He’s a young kid, I think he’s shown us a lot in camp here with his strength, size, ability. He’s trying to impress,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said post-game of Grebenkin’s fight.

Grebenkin was highlighted by Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving on Wednesday as a player who could make the team out of camp with a stellar showing and though he’s on the outside looking in at the moment, with the Maple Leafs sporting an excess of NHL-ready forwards, he continues to surge forward.

“He’s a strong guy. He’s a big guy, strong. I was impressed with him today. It was a tough practice but his pace didn’t drop off. Big, strong kid. Strong skater. Some real good stuff there, you know. I love his size.” Berube told reporters after Thursday’s practice sessions.

Grebenkin’s willingness to drop the gloves also made quite the impression on his Maple Leafs teammates.

“I just loved that. New heavy (weight) in town, I love to see that,” Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves said post-game. “It’s good to see kids get involved like that. It’s a full team thing.”

Grebenkin did not record a point during Sunday’s 6-5 loss and ultimately the process matters more than the preseason results. He set up Pacioretty for Toronto’s lone shot on goal during the first period but was often caught cheating up the ice looking for a breakout pass. It’ll be compelling to monitor Grebenkin throughout the second week of camp, as he’s been one of the risers for one of the few forward spots available.
