Blackhawks Reduce Training Camp Roster by 3 More Players

by admin

The Chicago Blackhawks have added to their recent training camp roster cuts by sending Zach Sanford and Brett Seney to the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. The team has also released Mitchell Weeks from his PTO and he has been returned to the AHL as well.

The training camp roster of the Blackhawks is now down to 32 players including 17 forwards, 11 defensemen, and four goalies.

Some interesting players to note that are still fighting for a spot are Frank Nazar, Antti Saarela, AJ Spellacy, Wyatt Kaiser, Nolan Allan, Isaak Phillips, Louis Crevier, and Drew Commesso.

Sanford and Seney are on the older side for the AHL and are seen as organizational depth. Both have played NHL games before, so the Blackhawks have that type of experience to call up if there comes a time this season.

Sanford is a veteran of 334 NHL games with seven different teams. He has 49 goals and 104 points in his career. His first season in Chicago’s organization was 2023-24 where he split time between the NHL and AHL. The 29-year-old recorded four assists in 18 games for the Blackhawks and three goals to go along with three assists in 13 games for the IceHogs. Sanford is also a Stanley Cup winner.

Seney is excellent in the AHL and a great piece to complement the younger players who are developing. He has had no trouble getting points in the AHL for any team since coming out of the NCAA. In the past three seasons, two for Rockford, Seney has been at nearly a point-per-game.

The 28-year-old produced 23 goals and 63 points in 68 games last season as well as 23 goals and 54 points in 59 games the season prior. He did get four games with the Blackhawks in 2023-24 as a reward for another great season in the minors, but that seems like all he will get barring a lot of injuries.

Mitchell played the majority of the past two seasons in the ECHL, but did get into five games for the IceHogs last season. He should spend a lot of his time in the ECHL once again, especially once Laurent Brossoit is back and pushes the goaltending depth chart back to normal.
