The Calgary Flames have reportedly signed defenseman Tyson Barrie to a one-year, $1.25 million contract, according to a report by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. Barrie, who joined the Flames on a professional tryout (PTO), has now secured his spot on the roster for the upcoming season.
Or, at least until the trade deadline, should the Flames elect to flip him based on their spot in the standings.
Recent roster moves hinted that a deal was imminent, with prospect Hunter Brzustewicz being reassigned to the minors, clearing the path for Barrie’s addition.
The Flames parted ways with Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, and Oliver Kylington over the past year, leaving the roster depleted of veteran blueliners. While Barrie is no longer a reliable top-four defenseman, and he might not be the elite power-play quarterback he once was, he brings valuable experience that the Flames can call upon during their rebuild.
Barrie is known for his offensive contributions and power-play abilities, making him a potentially valuable asset for Calgary. With 109 goals and 505 points in 809 career NHL games, the veteran blueliner has proven his scoring prowess over the length of his NHL career. Unfortunately, he had a down season with the Nashville Predators, posting only one goal and 15 points in 41 games.
Barrie’s contract has no trade protection and the one year means he could be moved if he’s productive and the Flames aren’t a playoff team. If he performs well, Calgary could potentially flip him for future assets at the trade deadline.
For now, Barrie has a chance to show he still has plenty left to offer in the NHL. “I want to get to 1,000 games and try to win a Stanley Cup,” Barrie told Global News this week.
