Samuel Honzek Makes Flames’ Opening Night Roster, Set for Historic NHL Debut

by admin

In a recent episode of his 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman revealed that Samuel Honzek has seemingly secured a spot on the Calgary Flames’ opening night roster. Following their decision to place Jakob Pelletier, Cole Schwindt, and Devin Cooley on waivers, it’s clear that Honzek’s performance during the preseason has stood out enough to warrant giving him a look to start the season.

Ahead of the team’s final preseason game, Honzek noted, “I just came here to make the team, that’s the goal.” He added, “I would say I’m happy with how I played.” The Flames appear to echo his sentiments — he produced and did what the coaches asked him to do.

Making the team shows that Honzek’s determination paid off. He admitted that even he was surprised at how he was able to play at a high level and maintain that level throughout camp. “It’s consistency, bring it every day to the rink. It doesn’t matter if its practice or a game,” Honzek said when speaking with reporters. “I want to stay humble and have a hard-working mindset.”

With Jegor Šarangović placed on the injured reserve list, the Flames currently have 13 forwards on their roster. If all goes according to plan, Honzek is expected to take the ice in the Flames’ season opener against the Vancouver Canucks. His anticipated debut would make him the youngest Slovak player to start the season in the NHL.

The 2024-25 season will mark a historic moment for Slovak hockey, as Honzek’s inclusion means three Slovak players will debut in the NHL before turning 20.

Honzek Earned the Chance to Play in the NHL

Honzek’s progression is a testament to his hard work and dynamic skill set. The Flames and the fans are eager to see what he can bring to the team this season. That said, time will tell how long his stay is. There’s a big difference between preseason and regular season and Honzek is about to see if he can take the next step.

With the puck dropping on the regular season soon, all eyes will be on the Flames as they look to make an impact in the Pacific Division despite being viewed by most analysts as a team that won’t contend. If Honzek has a big year, he could be one of the reasons the Flames are better than people expect.
