St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn joined Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill on Wednesday’s edition of Leafs Morning Take, where he expanded on a number of subjects, including playing against his brother Luke, and the innate nature of a NHL captaincy.
Schenn and the Blues will square off against the Maple Leafs on Thursday, where head coach Craig Berube is the primary storyline. Berube led the Blues to their first-ever Stanley Cup in 2019, where Schenn notched five goals and 12 points in 26 playoff games during the title run.
The 33-year-old expanded on what Berube demands from his players during the interview, providing a unique perspective on what the Maple Leafs are learning through the initial stages of the season.
“I would say just kind of demanding and guys are probably getting a grasp of what he’s looking for,” Schenn said. “It’s kind of black and white. He wants guys to play a certain way. He’s not going to take the sticks out of their top players’ hands, that’s for sure. He definitely wants an identity. He wants the top guys to play a certain way, when that happens, everyone else follows. That’s kind of the way he coaches and I think guys respect it.”
Berube will coach against his former team for the first time on Thursday. He was dismissed by the Blues 28 games into the 2023-24 season, after posting a 206-132-44 cumulative record through parts of six seasons, and was hired by the Maple Leafs on May 17.
“Can’t wait. There’s actually a little bit of buzz going around the St. Louis locker room with our media and stuff like that, they’re asking questions,” Schenn said of the upcoming game. “Chief was a guy who was so liked not just by the locker room, but by the city in general. Obviously, the first guy to lead the team to winning the Stanley Cup. Lots of fun with him around the locker room. There’s definitely a little buzz from us players already or staff or trainers talking about it. It’s definitely one you circle on the calendar and it’ll be a fun one to be a part of.”
