Macklin Celebrini’s Epic First Career Overtime Goal Lifts Sharks Past Red Wings 5-4

Macklin Celebrini scored 46 seconds into overtime for his first career OT winner to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

“It’s fun to win one in overtime. We’ve been on the wrong side of it a couple of times, so it was nice to get that one,” Celebrini said. “It was a great play by Granlund. He kind of set a pick there, and I just found myself with a lot of space, and I don’t know. I just tried to go low glove. I felt like he was cheating a little bit.”

Celebrini hadn’t scored a point in three games but got off his miniature slump with his goal. The Sharks got points from 13 players during the win and ended their three-game losing streak.

“I thought we deserved to win the hockey game,” Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky said. “I thought for the majority of the game, we pushed the pace, and we took over some parts of the third period that we’ve been talking about all year. That was our identity.”

The Sharks postgame team award is a custom football helmet, which Mackenzie Blackwood fittingly gave to Celebrini.

“I love when we win,” Celebrini said. “I mean, to get put in that situation, you want to come through for your team, especially after a couple of misses in the shootout and stuff. To get that goal, it was good for the group.”

The Sharks won’t practice tomorrow as they head to Texas to face the Dallas Stars on Wednesday for the first of a two-game road trip.
