Injury to Linus Ullmark? The Ottawa Senators Call Up Mads Sogaard On Emergency Basis From Belleville

Well, this isn’t news that will have Ottawa Senators fans giving thanks.

On Thanksgiving morning, before their third game of the season, the Senators have recalled goaltender Mads Sogaard on an emergency basis from Belleville of the AHL. That, in itself, isn’t bad news. Sogaard is a fine young goalie.

But it suggests that Ottawa’s new star goalie, Linus Ullmark, is coming out of the lineup.

Ullmark was absent from practice on Sunday afternoon, which head coach Travis Green labelled as a maintenance day. It wasn’t Ullmark’s first maintenance day in a Sens uniform; he missed a few days during training camp.

Ullmark is seen as the key ingredient in the Senators’ formula for a better start to the season. Last week, he signed a four-year, $33 million contract extension. He’s played both games for Ottawa so far and they couldn’t have been more different.

The Sens opened with a 3-1 home win over the Florida Panthers and then lost 4-1 to the Canadiens in Montreal. In the most recent game, which he finished, Ullmark showed no obvious sign of injury.

The net will almost certainly belong to backup Anton Forsberg against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday afternoon. It may have been his turn, anyway. Forsberg had a rough .890 save percentage last season but had a winning record of 15-12.

We’ll have more info on Ullmark’s status soon…
