Nashville Predators update Mark Borowiecki’s health status after scare vs. Flyers

Nashville Predators defenseman Mark Borowiecki is resting at home after after being stretchered off the ice in the second period of Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at Bridgestone Arena.

Borowiecki was discharged from Vanderbilt University Medical Center late Saturday night after awkwardly hitting the boards. He suffered no major injuries, the Predators said in a statement Sunday, “but his return to practice and game play is subject to further rest, observation and testing.”

Borowiecki, 33, hit the boards and lost his balance, and Flyers forward Morgan Frost appeared to finish his check as Borowiecki was off-balance. Borowiecki stayed on the ice for several minutes as team medical personnel secured him on a stretcher and helped him off the ice.

In the first period, Borowiecki had sparred with the Flyers’ Nicolas Deslauriers, with both players receiving five-minute major penalties. Deslauriers showed support for Borowiecki postgame.

“You don’t wish that to anybody,” Deslauriers said, according to Associated Press contributor Jim Diamond. “I think it was an automatic, especially for me, to go knock on his pads, but I’m trying to get his phone number now and send him a text. Outside of hockey, we’re all humans. Those are things you don’t want to see. I think it was a weird accident there.

Borowiecki is in his third season with the Predators and 11th NHL season overall. The Ottawa native has played in 457 NHL games, with 15 goals and 41 assists.
