67’s Spitfires and Battalion make Week 6 edition of Kia CHL Top 10:
The Ottawa 67’s, Windsor Spitfires and North Bay Battalion are included in the Week 6 edition of the Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings.. Watch

OHL rookies in action at 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge:
A total of 27 OHL players are representing Canada at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Take a look at action throughout the tournament as OHL rookies line up against their own age group in an international showcase. Read more

Boyd, Letang among OHL representatives named to Canada’s National Junior Team hockey operations staff:
Former OHL General Manager of the Year James Boyd of the Ottawa 67’s and Sarnia Sting Head Coach Alan Letang have been named to Canada’s National Junior Team hockey operations staff along with other representatives from across the League for the upcoming World Juniors. Read more

Battalion’s Petrov named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week:
Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov of the North Bay Battalion is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording four goals, two assists and six points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6. Read More

Spirit’s Lennox named OHL Goaltender of the Week:
New York Islanders prospect Tristan Lennox of the Saginaw Spirit is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with a shutout victory, a goals-against average of 0.51 and a save percentage of .979. Read more

Wolves name Derek MacKenzie Head Coach:
The Sudbury Wolves announced that alumnus Derek MacKenzie has been named the 31st Head Coach of the Sudbury Wolves. MacKenzie played 257 games through four seasons for the Sudbury Wolves between 1997 and 2001 accumulating 95 goals and 158 assists for 253 points. Read more

Knights name Diaco and McGurn co-captains:
The London Knights have named their captains for the 2022-2023 season as overagers George Diaco and Sean McGurn will lead as co-captains. McGurn and Diaco become the most recent Knights co-captains since Alec Regula and Liam Foudy in 2019-20. Read more

67’s Cameron earns 400th career OHL win:
67’s head coach Dave Cameron became the 15th coach in OHL history to win 400 games behind the bench last weekend. Cameron joins London’s Dale Hunter and Barrie’s Marty Williamson as one of three active coaches with 400 career victories. Read more

IceDogs hire Rick Wamsley as Hockey Consultant:
The Niagara IceDogs have announced Rick Wamsley as a Hockey Consultant. After a successful NHL hockey career, Wamsley has served as a key member of  the Toronto Maple Leafs, Columbus Blue Jackets, St. Louis Blues and Ottawa Senators’ coaching staffs. Read more

Hometown hero Avon embracing leadership role in Peterborough:
Peterborough product J.R. Avon is embracing a leadership role with his hometown club, and discusses the influence of step-dad Steve Larmer on his development path. Read more

Draft-eligible Brzustewicz thriving with Rangers:
2023 NHL Draft prospect Hunter Brzustewicz is off to a great start in his first OHL season with the Kitchener Rangers. Read more

Remembrance Day across the League:
The OHL honours veterans on Remembrance Day as teams across the League remember the brave men and women who have served our country and continue to do so. OHL fans are encouraged to join us as Windsor, Barrie, North Bay, London, Kitchener, Ottawa, Kingston, Sudbury, Saginaw and Flint are set to host games in their honour. Spitfires support Sleep in Heavenly Peace charity:
The Windsor Spitfires have presented the Sleep in Heavenly Peace charity with a $480.00 cheque as they look to help children who can not afford, and need of a bed. The charity is locally lead and has a vision to “end child bedlessness”, as Sleep in Heavenly Peace is on a mission to ensure that “no child sleeps on the floor in our town.” Read more

Storm to host Special Olympics night on Sunday:
The Guelph Storm, Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), Special Olympics Ontario and Guelph Police Services are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of individuals with an intellectual disability as they gear up to host their Special Olympics night on Sunday. The game will feature a Ceremonial Puck Drop with Special Olympians Jennifer Allen and Marc Richardson as well as Guelph Chief of Police, Gord Cobey. Read more

 

ALUMNI NOTES:

OHL mourns the loss of Dan Buccella:
The Ontario Hockey League is saddened by news of the passing of alumnus Dan Buccella. The Woodbridge, Ont. native played three OHL seasons with the Peterborough Petes, London Knights and Mississauga IceDogs from 2000-03. Read more

Neil’s #25 to be retired by Senators:
OHL graduate Chris Neil learned this past week that his #25 will be retired by the Ottawa Senators in a pre-game ceremony on Feb. 17th. Neil learned of the surprise while filming a promotional video for the game as the Senators celebrate their 30th anniversary season in the NHL. Neil, from Flesherton, Ont., played three OHL seasons with the North Bay Centennials from 1996-99 before spending 15 seasons with the Ottawa Senators from 2001-17. The hard-nosed winger recorded 250 points over 1,026 games in Ottawa, accumulating a franchise record 2,522 penalty minutes. Neil was Ottawa’s sixth round pick in the 1998 NHL Draft.

Wells makes NHL debut:
Peterborough Petes graduate Dylan Wells broke into the NHL on Saturday, stopping 12 of the 13 shots he faced in the third period of a Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 loss in Winnipeg. Originally a second round pick by Peterborough in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection, Wells played four seasons in maroon and white, going 69-73-7-10. Read more

Robertson named NHL’s first star of the week:
Former Kingston Frontenacs and Niagara IceDogs forward Jason Robertson is the NHL’s first star of the week, recording eight points (4-4–8) in three games. The 23-year-old pushed his goal-scoring streak to a career-high five game, helping the Stars improve to 8-3-1 on the season. Robertson has 19 points (9-10–19) through 13 games this season. He played four seasons in the OHL between Kingston and Niagara, recording 317 points (149-168–317) over 252 career regular season games.

Staal plays 1,300th NHL game:
Former Peterborough Petes forward Eric Staal played his 1,300th career NHL contest on Wednesday. The 38-year-old from Thunder Bay, Ont. was originally selected by the Carolina Hurricanes with the second overall pick of the 2003 NHL Draft, and has since split his career between the Hurricanes, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers. Staal won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006. He’s one of four brothers to have played in both the OHL and NHL, and played his 1,300th contest against younger siblings Jordan and Marc with the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.

Maurice moves ahead of Arbour for sixth-most wins in NHL history:
Paul Maurice collected his 783rd career NHL coaching win on Wednesday, moving ahead of Al Arbour for sixth on the NHL’s all-time list. The Sault Ste. Marie native both played and coached in the OHL prior to his lengthy NHL coaching career. Maurice recently served as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets for parts of nine seasons, and is in his first campaign as head coach of the Florida Panthers. Maurice guided the Detroit Jr. Red Wings to an OHL championship in his final year as an OHL head coach in 1995.
