OHL grads win big over the weekend – Ontario Hockey League

A total of 217 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2023 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 16-19 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Nine straight for the UNB Reds:

Make it nine straight wins for the University of New Brunswick Reds, as they closed out last week with a perfect 3-0 performance.

The Reds cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Acadia Axemen on Tuesday as Saginaw Spirit graduate Brady Gilmour scored the first goal of the night. Other UNB goals came from Soo Greyhounds alumni Cole MacKay, Hamilton Bulldogs graduate Kade Landry, and Barrie Colts alumni Jason Willms. Former Ottawa 67’s forward Austen Keating was named Player of the Game, while Kitchener Rangers graduate Michael Petizian was named third star.

Following Tuesday’s performance, the Reds came out hot against the Axemen on Friday, dominating Acadia 5-1. Keating opened the scoring for the Reds, while Hamilton Bulldogs graduate Isaac Nurse also found the back of the net.

The Reds recorded another five-goal game on Saturday as they closed out the Saint Mary’s Huskies with a 5-2 victory at home. London Knights alumnus Cody Morgan, Nurse and Willms scored markers for the Reds, while Landry also contributed a goal and an assist to earn Player of the Game honours.

UNB remains at the top of the Atlantic University Sport standings with a 10-2-0-0 record.

Laurier Golden Hawks clinch fourth win in five games:

The Laurier Golden Hawks clinched their fourth win in five games with back-to-back victories over the weekend. Taking on the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, Oshawa Generals graduate Grayden Gottschalk opened the scoring in the first period for the Golden Hawks, marking the first time that Laurier has opened the scoring this season. Tied in the third period, Guelph Storm alumnus Colin Campbell netted the game-winner as the Golden Hawks defeated the Gryphons 3-2.

The Golden Hawks headed to Toronto on Saturday, defeating the #8 ranked Toronto Metropolitan Bold 3-1. Kingston Frontenacs alumnus Conor Ali recorded a goal and an assist in the win, while former North Bay Battalion goaltender Christian Propp saved 22 of 23 shots that TMU sent in his direction. Propp earned Laurier’s Athlete of the Week honours, posting a 1.00 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage over the weekend.

Laurier looks to extend their winnings as they improve their record to 4-5-1.

Toronto Varsity Blues go 2-0:

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team had a two-win showing last week, improving their record to 5-4-1.

The Varsity Blues opened the weekend with a 5-1 win over the York Lions, improving to third-place in the OUA West division. Windsor Spitfires alumni Cole Purboo assisted two helpers, while Sudbury Wolves graduate Owen Robinson buried an empty net opportunity in the final minutes of the game to seal the win.

Back on their home ice, the Varsity Blues fought off a Guelph Gryphons squad Saturday afternoon to earn a 5-4 victory in overtime. Robinson found the back of the net as he opened the scoring for Toronto, and would follow up with another in the second frame to restore a two-goal lead.

Tied at the end of regulation, the Blues would go on to secure the extra point in overtime as Purboo tipped one home to secure their third consecutive win.

OHL grads in Canada West:

Flint Firebirds alumni Jack Wismer contributed a pair of helpers as the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds held off Trinity Western in a 5-4 road win on Friday.

London Knights graduates Jordan Kooy and Shane Collins were also successful on the ice last week as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the MacEwan Griffins 5-1 on Saturday. Collins contributed an assist to the win, while Kooy stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced.
