The Ontario Hockey League is mourning the loss of former Kingston Frontenacs, Ottawa 67’s, London Knights and Soo Greyhounds goaltender Matthew Spezza, who has passed away at the age of 37.

Older brother Jason Spezza, who currently serves as assistant general manager of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, announced the news through the club’s social media accounts on Monday.

Matthew Spezza played in the OHL from 2004-06, appearing in 19 regular season games. He was originally selected by the Brampton Battalion in the eighth round of the 2002 OHL Priority Selection, and played in parts of two OHL seasons. Following his junior career, Spezza played a pair of seasons with the IHL’s Flint Generals from 2007-09.

The League sends thoughts and condolences to the Spezza family along with those who were close to Matthew at this difficult time.
