Flyers lose 10 or more straight for 3rd time in just over a year originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
Last season, at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, the Flyers set a franchise record for futility with a 13th consecutive loss.
Just over 10 months later, in the same building, the Flyers completed another double-digit skid with a 10th straight defeat.
In a 2-2 game Saturday night, John Tortorella’s embattled club unraveled during the third period for a 5-2 loss to the Islanders. The Flyers (7-10-5) have dropped 10 or more games in succession for the third time in a little over a year.
They’ve been outscored 44-20 in their 0-7-3 skid. They’ve gone 2-8-4 in November. They wrap up the month on Tuesday.
The Islanders (15-8-0) are 13-4-0 in their last 17 games. The Flyers face New York three more times this season.
• In the span of a year and nine days, the Flyers have had the following losing streaks:
-
13 games — 0-10-3 from Dec. 30, 2021-Jan. 25, 2022
-
10 games — 0-8-2 from Nov. 18-Dec. 8, 2021
-
10 games — 0-7-3 from Nov. 10-26, 2022 (current)
-
6 games — 0-4-2 from Feb. 9-22, 2022
-
6 games — 0-6-0 from April 9-19, 2022
The Flyers are pretty banged up. That shouldn’t be ignored. They’re missing six forwards right now and five of them, when healthy, are top-six forwards in the team’s lineup.
But that doesn’t justify the lack of depth and what the Flyers could have done to help it during the offseason. Nobody thought the Flyers would be a playoff team this season, but general manager Chuck Fletcher defended his summer by saying he felt the 2022-23 club would be more competitive.
That should mean at least avoiding a double-digit slide in November. The organization’s fan base went through two of those last season. And it’s having to stomach another one when being more competitive should translate to finding one win through a stretch of 10 games.

• The Flyers fell to 1-2-4 in games when they’re tied entering the third period.
They played a pretty good game through the first 40 minutes. Effort was there, the execution was solid.
Kevin Hayes set up goals for Lukas Sedlak and Joel Farabee to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.
Zach Parise tied the game for New York on a power play goal with 3:22 minutes left in the second period.
The game turned upside down on the Flyers in the final stanza. During the opening three and a half minutes, the Flyers allowed two goals in a span of 23 seconds. Parise then added another on the power play and the Flyers were on their way to a lopsided loss.
Frustration boiled over for the Flyers in the final four minutes of the game. In defense of Hayes, who took a hit from Alexander Romanov, Tony DeAngelo fought Oliver Wahlstrom and Nicolas Deslauriers tried to fight Romanov.
Defending your teammates is at least a good sign amid a losing streak.
• Felix Sandstrom made 18 saves on 23 shots.
New York backup Semyon Varlamov stopped 26 of the Flyers’ 28 shots.
• The Flyers’ power play has gone 2 for 29 (6.9 percent) during the 10-game skid.
• The Flyers are back in action Tuesday when they face the Islanders again (7:30 p.m. ET/ESPN+, Hulu). The matchup kicks off a five-game homestand for the Flyers.
