OHL Behind the Scenes: Colts’ Cheryl Whitman

Throughout the off-season, the Ontario Hockey League will be spotlighting a member from each of our teams’ front office staffs as we look to highlight those working “Behind the Scenes” of the day-to-day operations.

Being a part of the team since the franchise’s inaugural season, the newest edition features Barrie Colts Corporate Controller and Accounting Manager, Cheryl Whitman.

CW: My name is Cheryl Whitman, I am the Corporate Controller for Horsepower Sports & Entertainment Group, O/A Barrie Colts Junior Hockey Club. I have worked for the Barrie Colts organization since their inaugural year in many different roles.

What led you to your current role?

CW: In 2002 I took over the Accounting Manager role for Colt Food Services, a subsidiary of Horsepower Sports and Entertainment which I continued until early this Spring when I switched departments to be responsible for all accounting functions for both Horsepower Sports & Entertainment & the Barrie Colts Hockey Club.

You’ve been with the Colts since 2002, what has been your favourite Barrie Colts memory?

CW: I have had the pleasure of being part of this team and have many memorable experiences.  I would say my fondest memory is watching our team compete in the memorial cup in 2000 as well as supporting our team as an employee and fan through our OHL Championship opportunity in May of 2013.

Being a part of the team for 20+ years, what is the must fulfilling part about working for the organization?

CW: Over the years I have had had the opportunity to work and meet some amazing people and have created friendships that will last a life time.  I am very proud to be part of this team and am excited to support our hockey club as a team member and fan for many more years.
