Oct. 25—The 14th annual Slapshot Cup hockey tournament and former NHL coach Bruce Boudreau will return to 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial, as the event will be held over the next two weekends.
“It’s getting bigger and better, and we’re excited about it,” Slapshot Cup Tournament Director David Piro said.
Players on 34 teams will play in 58 games, beginning Friday through Sunday this weekend and resuming on Nov. 3-5, according to Piro. Men’s and women’s competition will include divisions based on age, ranging from 21 years old to a 60-and-over division.
Boudreau, who played on the 1975-76 Johnstown Jets team and appeared in the movie “Slap Shot,” is scheduled to participate in multiple tournament-related events on Nov. 4. He coached 15 NHL seasons and compiled a 617-342-128 regular-season record with the Washington Capitals (2007-11), Anaheim Ducks (2011-16), Minnesota Wild (2016-20) and Vancouver Canucks (2021-23).
“It’s great to have Bruce Boudreau back in Johnstown,” said Piro, noting that the NHL Network analyst will be part of “Brunch with Bruce,” as well as an appearance at Ziggy’s Sports adjacent to the arena, followed by a “Beer with Bruce” VIP happy hour back at the War Memorial.
The “Brunch with Bruce” on Nov. 4 will be at 1st Summit Arena. Cost is $15 and tickets may be ordered through Piro at 814-243-5765.
“We’re also going to do a presentation on concussions and youth sports on Saturday morning (Nov. 4),” Piro said. “Every athletic director, every coach, every parent, every athlete is invited. It’s not just hockey.”
