Former Penguins Goalie Signs With Dallas Stars

Former Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Magnus Hellberg is headed to the Lone Star State, agreeing to a deal with the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, which should lead to an opportunity with the Texas Stars, their AHL affiliate.

Initially drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2011, the former 38th overall pick is set to join his sixth organization, having also played with the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings (twice), Ottawa Senators, and most recently the Penguins in 2023-24.

He produced a 1-0-0 record in three games with five goals against an impressive .922 SV%.

However, like most of his career, Hellberg was regulated to the minors, where he appeared in 19 contests with the Wilkes-Barrer/Scranton Penguins, going 9-8-2 with a 2.92 GAA and .905 SV%.

Since coming to North America in 2012-13, he’s appeared in 218 AHL games, earning a 100-83-17 record with 15 shutouts. On top of a .913 SV% and 2.52 GAA, Hellberg has three assists on his resume.

Although he’s been successful in the regular season, Hellberg’s AHL playoff record is just 1-4, but his statistics are off the charts at 1.97 GAA and .931 SV%.

In the NHL, he’s played just 26 games with a 8-8-1 record, .250 GAA and .890 SV%.

At 33, the native of Uppsala, Sweden continues to find gigs in North America, last playing in the KHL from 2017 to 2021 with SKA St. Petersburg and HK Sochi.

Interestingly, Hellberg represented his home country at the 2022 Winter Olympics since he was not under an NHL contract at the time.
