The Toronto Maple Leafs recently announced that former Montreal Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty will attend their training camp on a professional tryout.
The 36-year-old played 47 games with the Washington Capitals last year and, due to injuries, has only skated in 52 games over the past two seasons.
Pacioretty is a former Canadiens’ first-round pick (22nd overall) from the 2007 Draft, spending 10 seasons with the club, serving as captain from 2015 to 2018.

Eventually, Montreal traded him to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a second-round pick in 2019, Tomas Tatar, and current captain Nick Suzuki.
Suppose Pacioretty cracks the Maple Leafs’ lineup as he continues to overcome two torn Achilles heel injuries. In that case, he’ll become only the fourth former Canadiens captain, and first, since Kirk Muller in 1996, to skate with Toronto.

The other players on this list include former Vezina Trophy winner George Hainsworth and Vincent Damphousse, who began his career as a Maple Leafs draft pick and eventually served as captain of the Canadiens. Pacioretty’s decision is in stark contrast with former teammate Josh Gorges who famously refused to be traded to the Toronto outfit because they were the Canadiens’ rivals.
Pacioretty is the 29th highest scorer in Montreal history, with 448 points in 626 games. In 16 NHL seasons, he’s played 902 games and scored 668 points while winning the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2012.
