Canucks Jiří Patera Claimed Off Waivers By The Boston Bruins

by admin

Goaltender Jiří Patera is no longer with the Vancouver Canucks, as he was claimed off waivers by the Boston Bruins on Wednesday. Patera signed a two-year contract with the Canucks on July 1 and was placed on waivers Tuesday so that he could be assigned to the Abbotsford Canucks before the start of their 2024 Training Camp. The 25-year-old played one pre-season game with Vancouver, stopping 16 of the 19 shots he faced in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Calgary Flames.

The Bruins claiming Patera off waivers comes at an interesting time, as the organization is having difficulties signing starter Jeremy Swayman. The situation has become so tense that negotiations have spilled into the media, with former Canucks forward and current team President Cam Neely saying, “I don’t want to get into the weeds with what [Swayman’s] ask is, but I know that I have 64 million reasons why I’d be playing right now.” After Neely’s statement, Swayman’s agent took to social media to say, “At today’s press conference, $64 million was referenced. This was the first time that number was discussed in our negotiations. Prior to the press conference, no offer was made reaching that level.”

As for Phil Di Giuseppe, Nate Smith, and Christian Wolanin, they all cleared waivers and will be part of Abbotsford’s 2024 Training Camp. When asked about Di Guiseppe yesterday, Vancouver Head Coach Rick Tocchet said, “I hope he doesn’t get picked up.” Despite being sent down, Tocchet also indicated that Di Giuseppe may still be an option for the Canucks during the season.
