The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they have signed forward Alex Nylander to a prorated one-year NHL contract worth $775,000 and recalled him from the Toronto Marlies.
The 26-year-old has eight goals and four assists in 14 games in the AHL this season.
Nylander can help provide an offensive boost to a Maple Leafs team that currently has injuries to forwards Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies, Max Domi, Max Pacioretty, David Kampf, and Calle Jarnkrok.
The eight overall selection by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2016 draft, Nylander had a strong showing to finish last season, posting 11 goals and 15 points in 23 games with Columbus after coming over in a February trade.
He has 25 goals and 49 points in 121 career NHL games.
Alex now has the opportunity to play with his brother William, who leads the Leafs with 13 goals in 20 games.
Nylander signed an AHL contract with the Marlies in July in hopes an opportunity like this would arise. He will need to clear waivers in order to re-join the Marlies.
His first opportunity to suit up for the Leafs comes Sunday Nov. 24 against the Utah HC.
