With the deadline to set opening night rosters on Monday, teams across the league are making their final cuts. That means a lot of names on the waiver wire, and a lot of notable names at that.

Among those names is former Oiler William Lagesson. The Swedish defenceman was selected by the Oilers in the fourth round, 91st overall, in 2014. He played 57 games with Edmonton from 2019-20 to 2021-22, before being sent to Montreal in exchange for Brett Kulak.

Lagesson split last season between Toronto and Anaheim, playing 40 games in the NHL and 5 in the AHL. He signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Detroit Red Wings on July 1st this summer. He joins Justin Holl, Sheldon Dries, Brogan Rafferty, and Joe Snively among Red Wings placed on waivers today.

Lagesson is the only former Oiler on waivers today, but far from the only interesting player. Along with Oilers Josh Brown, Drake Caggiula, Raphael Lavoie, and Olivier Rodrigue, NHL teams will also have the chance to claim veterans James Reimer, Pierre Engvall, and Zach Aston-Reese.

There are also plenty of notable former prospects, such Jakob Pelletier (CGY), Ryan Suzuki (CAR), and Erik Brannstrom, who Vancouver waived after acquiring him from Colorado on Sunday morning.

The deadline for teams to submit their opening day rosters is 5pm ET on Monday, October 7th. The North American portion of the NHL regular season starts on Wednesday night, including the Oilers’ season opener against the Jets.
