After two decades of misery against the Coyotes franchise, the Leafs are off to a good start against the Utah Hockey Club.
Toronto’s now won four in a row and seven of eight. They’re red-hot.
Carter Hutton filled in for Jay Rosehill on the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Before we recapped Sunday night’s game, we things off by talking some Jim Montgomery. Just days after being canned by Boston, Montgomery was named the new head coach of the St. Louis Blues on Sunday. Drew Bannister, who spent just 22 short games as the full-time (non-interim) bench boss, was fired. At the end of the day, it’s a business —another stern reminder.
After that, we joked about Toronto traffic a bit, too. Prior to puck drop on Sunday, Utah put out a social media video about the team having to walk from the hotel to Scotiabank Arena for the game. Believe it or not, all the mayhem was caused by the Santa Claus parade. Go figure.
Courtesy of Prime Video, we got into the nuts and bolts of Toronto’s 3-2 victory over Utah. Most specifically, Mitch Marner and William Nylander were outstanding. In eight games without Auston Matthews, Marner’s tallied seven multi-point efforts. Just think about that for a second. Meantime, according to Leafs PR, William and Alex Nylander became the 13th set of brothers to play for the franchise, and the fifth set to play a game together for the Leafs. Also, we broke down Joseph Woll’s night. He made 23 saves, none bigger than the one on Michael Carcone midway through the third period.
After that, brought to you by Charm Diamond Centres, one of the newest members of the Hockey Hall of Fame David Poile dropped by the show. We talked about his illustrious career, how he views this current Leafs squad under Craig Berube, and how he would handle the Marner/Tavares situation if he were GM.
Following up Poile, Jeff Marek, host of THE SHEET (launching Dec. 2 at 3 PM ET on the Daily Faceoff YouTube channel), joined us. He weighed in on Alex Nylander’s debut, what the Leafs should be coveting on the trade market, and if Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan should be deemed untouchables. Additionally, Marek had some great nuggets on potential OHL expansion as well as a preview for this week’s CHL USA Prospect Challenge.
Jay Rosehill will be back for the Tuesday edition. Talk then!
