Nic Petan has signed a one-year KHL contract with Ak Bars Kazan for the 2024-25 season, per a press release from the team.
The 29-year-old was an AHL All-Star last season as a member of the Iowa Wild before being traded to the Hartford Wolf Pack at the deadline. He had 15 goals and 48 points in 59 total games before adding four points in 10 playoff games. He also had two assists in six NHL games with the Minnesota Wild.
Originally selected in the second round of the 2013 draft by the Winnipeg Jets, Petan played 170 career NHL games split between the Jets, Wild, Vancouver Canucks, and Toronto Maple Leafs, recording seven goals and 35 points.
A fantastic playmaker, Petan was never quite able to carve out a consistent role in the NHL but thrived in this time in the AHL. In 296 games across five franchises Petan scored 95 goals and 194 assists to finish just under a point-per-game for his career.
Petan was the 2012-13 CHL top scorer and WHL champion. He also won the 2013 Ivan Hlinka and 2015 World Junior Championship gold medal with team Canada.
