For the Ottawa Senators, this was one of those ambush games.
The Seattle Kraken were relaxing in Ottawa on Friday night, lying in wait, while the Senators were in New York working their tails off in a tough loss to the Rangers. But the Sens were none the worse for wear on Saturday night, coming home and beating the Kraken 3-0.
Anton Forsberg picked up his second shutout in three games, equaling his shutout total from each of the last two seasons. As the Sens began to perhaps get a little tired in the third period of the back-to-back, that’s when Forsberg was at his best. The Sens are now 6-5 on the season and Forsberg has four of the victories.
Adam Gaudette continued his torrid start to the season, scoring his sixth goal in 10 games. Gaudette began the night with just 15 shots and 9:43 time on ice per game. His first period goal gave the Sens a 1-0 lead and gave him the team lead with 6 goals.
In the second period, Brady Tkachuk reclaimed that lead with his seventh goal of the season, tipping home a Jacob Bernard-Docker shot from the point to make it 2-0. Whether it was a nod to Daniel Alfredsson or next week’s Remembrance Day, Ottawa numerologists went wild.
In the third period, the Senators put things away with an empty net goal by Tim Stutzle. After a huge shot block from Travis Hamonic, Michael Amadio dumped the puck out past the defence, knowing full well Stutzle would be able to sprint past the Kraken defenders to put the game on ice.
The Senators improve to 6-5 on the young season, and their next game is Tuesday night in Buffalo.
