Assessing Brad Treliving’s first trade deadline as Leafs GM: Leafs Morning Take

by

As expected, it turned out to be a quiet trade deadline for Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In the end, the only deadline day move they made was acquiring depth forward Connor Dewar from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a 2026 fourth round pick. It was a low risk move, obviously. Dating back to last week, Toronto also brought in Ilya Lyubushkin, Joel Edmundson, and Boston University product Cade Webber.

At any rate, Jay Rosehill and I got together for a trade deadline recap show. As mentioned, the Leafs didn’t do much. They added some depth pieces —and that’s about it. Indisputably, a lot of the heavy lifting – especially on the back-end – will come this summer when Treliving gets a chance to mould the roster to his liking a bit more. Toronto will have a lot of cap space to play with.

Presented by Door Dash, The Appetizer focused on Toronto’s moves over the past week. Firstly, we broke down the Dewar add. Ahead of the deadline, they were looking for a depth forward, and after the scouring the market, they found their guy. The 24-year-old will fight with the likes of Noah Gregor, Pontus Holmberg, and David Kampf, among others, for playing time down the stretch.

Thanks to Tim Hortons, we also looked at what the rest of the Atlantic Division did ahead of the deadline. Florida added Vladimir Tarasenko and Kyle Okposo, Tampa grabbed Anthony Duclair and Matt Dumba. Meanwhile, the Bruins brought in Patrick Maroon and Andrew Peeke. All in all, it was a fairly quiet deadline period for the division —in general.

Furthermore, thanks to Douglas, we looked back at Thursday night’s 4-1 loss in Boston. Most specifically, we talked about Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and William Nylander’s tough night. The Leafs went winless in a regular season versus the Bruins for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign.

Courtesy the Wendy’s Daily Faceoff Survivor, we previewed Toronto’s clash in Montreal on Saturday night. Will Ryan Reaves and Arber Xhekaj square off again? Meantime, Joel Edmundson, who was acquired from Washington, could make his Leafs debut —against one of his former teams, no less.

Be sure to join us on Monday as we continue to pick apart the pieces from the quiet deadline, recap Saturday night’s content in Montreal, and look ahead to the stretch drive.
