Hockey Canada announced Tuesday that a pair of OHL players have been added to the roster for the National Junior Team Summer Development Camp set to take place from July 23-27 in Calgary, Alta., bringing the League’s total to 15.
Both eligible for this week’s 2022 NHL Draft, Mississauga Steelheads forward Owen Beck and North Bay Battalion defenceman Ty Nelson join Hockey Canada’s 45-man roster.
The 10th ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting’s Final Rankings, Beck scored 21 goals, added 30 assists and finished with 50 points in 68 games as a rookie with the Mississauga Steelheads. Beck, who won 60.6 percent of his faceoffs, was voted to the OHL’s Second All-Rookie Team for 2021-22. The 18-year-old from Port Hope, Ont. earned both the OHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award and the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award this past season.
A former first overall pick in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, Nelson led OHL rookie defencemen with 51 points (9-42–51) in 66 games for the Central Division champion North Bay Battalion.. The 5-foot-10, 197Ib. right-shot defender was voted to the OHL’s Second All-Rookie Team and enters the NHL Draft as the 32nd ranked skater in North America.
Beck and Nelson attend summer camp on the journey to earn a spot on Canada’s National Junior Team that will compete in the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship that will be held in Halifax, NS and Moncton, NB from Dec. 26, 2022 to Jan. 5, 2023.
