Canadiens: Guhle Isn’t the First Hab to Have Appendix Issues

Upon arriving at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard and being given the Montreal Canadiens training camp teams, the reporters in attendance noticed that Kaiden Guhle was nowhere to be seen. However, the mystery didn’t last long, as the team soon announced the reason.

The 22-year-old first-round pick at the 2020 Draft and Sherwood Park, Alberta native had his appendix removed on Wednesday and will be re-evaluated in seven days. While some may think this is really bad timing, it’s nothing compared to when Patrick Roy suffered his own appendix issue.

In the 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs, Saint-Patrick suffered a bout of appendicitis, which forced him to miss game three of the Canadiens’ first-round series against the Boston Bruins. Ron Tugnutt had to fill in, but without the two-time Conn Smythe winner (back then), the Habs lost 6-3, going down 2-1 in the series.

Meanwhile, the goaltender was hospitalized and given antibiotics, which allowed him to return for Game 4, where he guided the Canadiens to a 5-2 win. Roy then backstopped the Habs to a 2-1 OT win (in which he stopped 60 of the 61 shots) to take a 3-2 lead in the series. Casseau was out of miracles, however, and the Tricolore lost the next two games, losing the series in seven games.

After the elimination on April 29, 1994, it only took a few days for Roy to go under the knife and have his appendix removed on May 3, 1994.

There’s never a right time to have appendix surgery, but the start of training camp is definitely better than during the playoffs. Hopefully, Guhle will heal up quickly and be able to join the team as soon as possible.
