Canucks Backup Goalie Key To Success In 24-25

Vancouver Canucks backup goalie Arturs Silovs will play a pivotal role as the man behind Thatcher Demko in 2024-25.

Despite having nine career NHL regular season games, head coach Rick Tocchet leaned on Silovs for ten games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The on-paper numbers for Silovs in the postseason don’t jump off the page, but the 23-year-old kept the Canucks in most games. With Casey DeSmith signing with the Dallas Stars, Silovs officially moves into the No. 2 goalie.

DeSmith played 29 games last season as Demko’s backup. Silovs could see similar action, especially considering Demko’s injury history.

Demko played 51 games last season and was spectacular. He was nominated for the Vezina as the league’s best goalie and proved why he is a top-five goalie in the league, but not according to NHL Network.

Silovs has minimal experience, but his postseason run should give the Vancouver Canucks comfort. In ten playoff games Silovs won five, including a shutout in Game Six against the Nashville Predators to close out the series.

Given Demko’s injury history, Silovs could easily hit 35 games this season. Demko’s injury status hasn’t been updated since the end of the postseason, but all signs point to him being back for the start of the 24-25 season. Some reporters believe Demko and Silovs are one of the better goaltending tandems in the NHL.

Goaltending wins championships, and if the Canucks want to win the Pacific division for the second straight season, Silovs will be a big part of the team’s success.
