The Colorado Avalanche announced they have signed forward Matthew Phillips to a one-year contract worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $287,500 at the AHL level.
Phillips spent the majority of last season in the NHL, playing three games for the Pittsburgh Penguins and 28 for the Washington Capitals, recording one goal and five points, all with the Capitals.
The 26-year-old played nine games for the Hershey Bears in the AHL regular season and notched six points. He appeared in six AHL playoff games and went pointless. After struggling with an injury Phillips could not break back into the Hershey lineup as the team won their second straight Calder Cup.

A sixth round pick of the Calgary Flames in 2016, Phillips joined the Stockton Heat after a fantastic WHL career where he scored 281 points in 215 games.
Phillips has spent the majority of his professional career in the AHL with Stockton, Calgary and Hershey. In 274 career AHL games he has 106 goals and 137 assists. He is a two-time AHL All-Star and was named to the AHL First All-Star Team in 2022-23.
The Calgary, AB, native has five points in 34 career NHL games. A small and extremely skilled player, Phillips will have talented players to play with on the Avalanche, and will be a top line player with the Colorado Eagles if he ends up in the AHL.
