We cruise into the final weekend ahead of the holiday break with lots to update you on. Here’s what’s happening in the OHL This Week.

15 OHL players selected for 2023 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game:
Slated for January 25 at the Langley Events Centre, the 2023 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game showcases the top-40 CHL players eligible for the 2023 NHL Draft from across the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL. The list of 15 OHL players selected to compete includes nine forwards, five defencemen and one goaltender. Read More

Six OHL players to represent Canada at 2023 World Juniors:
Six OHL players have been named to Canada’s National Junior Team roster for the upcoming 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship to be held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Halifax, N.S. and Moncton, N.B. Read More

OHL presents PWHPA Showcase coming to Barrie, Kitchener, Niagara & Peterborough :
The OHL announced that it is partnering with the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) to bring some of the best women’s hockey talent in the world, including a total of 44 Olympians, to OHL venues in February 2023.Founded in 2019, the PWHPA features four teams comprised of 100 of the world’s best female hockey players and was formed with the goal of creating a sustainable league that provides equity, fairness, and opportunity in women’s professional hockey.  Read more

67’s, Knights and Battalion make Week 11 edition of Kia CHL Top 10:
The Ottawa 67’s, London Knights and North Bay Battalion are included in the Week 11 edition of the Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings while the Saginaw Spirit received an honourable mention. Watch

Generals’ Gagnier named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week:
Ryan Gagnier of the Oshawa Generals is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording two goals, six assists and eight points in three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6. Read More

IceDogs’ Flores named OHL Goaltender of the Week:
Owen Flores of the Niagara IceDogs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with one win and a shootout loss, a goals-against average of 1.44 and save percentage of .963. Read more

Kitchener Rangers blueliner Tomas Hamara joins Saginaw Spirit forward Matyas Sapovaliv on Czechia’s pre-tournament roster. Czechia begins the 2023 World Juniors against Canada on Boxing Day.  Read more

Mesar and Petrovsky named to Slovakia’s preliminary roster for 2023 World Juniors:
Forwards Filip Mesar of the Kitchener Rangers and Servac Petrovsky of the Owen Sound Attack have been named to Slovakia’s preliminary roster for the 2023 World Juniors. Read more

Knights’ Del Monte named to Germany’s preliminary roster for 2023 World Juniors:
London Knights forward Ryan Del Monte is one of 26 players named to Germany’s preliminary roster for the upcoming 2023 World Juniors in Moncton, N.B. and Halifax, N.S..  Read more

Ondrej Molnar commits to Otters:
The Erie Otters announced the signing of 2023 NHL Draft prospect Ondrej Molnar from Slovakia. Molnar was selected fifth overall by the Otters in the 2022 CHL Import Draft. Earlier this season Molnar was named to NHL Central Scouting’s October “Players to Watch” List, earning a ‘B’ Ranking. Read more

Toronto Marlboros remain on top in fourth edition of OHL Cup Top 10 Rankings:
It was a quieter week in the province’s U16 AAA circuit, but the Peterborough Minor Petes scored a pair of lopsided victories to rise two spots in the fourth edition of the OHL Cup Top 10 Rankings. Read more

Top U16 AAA players from across the province gather for Team Ontario Camp:
For the first time since 2018-19, Ontario will be sending a U16 team to the Canada Winter Games to compete for a gold medal in one of the largest youth sporting events in the country. This past weekend, the OHF  invited 40 of the top players from across the province to Kitchener to evaluate who could potentially earn a spot on the roster. Read more

 

COMMUNITY CORNER:

Firebirds help raise over $18,000 in 7th Annual Old Newsboys of Flint Toy Drive:
The Flint Firebirds have helped raise more than $18,000 in monetary donations and collected over 500 toys to be distributed to families in need around Genesee County. Read more

Knights Alumni Foundation pledges $100,000 to Children’s Health Foundation’s Child Life Program:
This past Saturday, the London Knights along with the Knights Alumni Foundation announced a $100,000 commitment to the Children’s Health Foundation’s Child Life Program, supporting families during the most difficult time of their child’s life.

Teddy Bear Toss season across the League:
It’s officially Teddy Bear Toss season in the OHL! Don’t miss the Teddy Bear Toss in your city as teams collect stuffed toys to be distributed to charitable organizations in their communities. Fans can let bears fly on Saturday in Ottawa, Guelph and Saginaw. Read more

Troops bring out new third jerseys on Thursday:
The North Bay Battalion will be unveiling their first-ever third jersey on Thursday night when the Mississauga Steelheads visit the Memorial Gardens. The Troops, who own first place in the Central Division with a 20-8-1 record, come off a week where they held their Teddy Bear Toss game, featuring a goal from Anthony Romani just 12 seconds into regulation.

Spitfires to host Christmas Game on Thursday:
The Windsor Spitfires are set to host their Christmas Game on Thursday. Join the Spitfires for plenty of holiday fun including hot chocolate, ornament decorating, music, giveaways, and special North Pole guests!

Rangers to host Holiday Game on Friday:
The Kitchener Rangers are set to host their annual Holiday game on Friday. The Rangers encourage fans to wear their best “ugly” Christmas or Holiday sweater and head down to The Aud to celebrate the season with the team!

Wolves to host Holiday Game on Friday:
The Sudbury Wolves are set to host their Holiday Game on Friday. Friday’s game is sponsored by Bestech who will be on hand with prizes and giveaways for fans who wear ugly holiday sweaters. Santa will also be in attendance!

Frontenacs to host 90’s Night on Friday:
The Kingston Frontenacs are set to host their 90’s themed night on Friday. A night filled with 90’s fun, the Fronts encourage fans to wear their best themed outfits from the decade to the game! Kingston’s Pure Country Radio Station will be giving three lucky fans a chance to win $9,900.00 during the first intermission.

Petes to host Christmas Game on Saturday:
The Peterborough Petes are set to host their annual Christmas Game on Saturday. The night will feature specially designed Christmas jerseys worn by the Petes to be auctioned off during the game. All proceeds from the auction will go to Hockey Ministries International. Make sure to wear your ugly Christmas sweater to the game for a chance to be featured in the Fannex Ugly Christmas Sweater Competition at the intermission!

Knights to host Can Drive on Saturday and Sunday:
The London Knights are set to host their Be a Fan, Bring a Can weekend. The Knights ask all fans in attendance to bring a non-perishable food items to support the London Food Bank and Business Cares London this holiday season.

Frontenacs to host Holiday Game on Sunday:
The Kingston Frontenacs are set to host their Holiday Game on Sunday. Bring your family and friends to the event and meet Santa and his little helper, Barrack the Bear. Santa will be available for photos from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm! There will be a holiday market set up on the main concourse where fans can purchase gifts and stocking stuffers from local artisans. Doors open at 12:00 pm so our fans can get in and enjoy the holiday market early.

Frontenacs to honour Anthony and Chris Stewart on January 14th:
The Kingston Frontenacs have announced that Anthony and Chris Stewart will be honoured during the team’s game on Saturday, January 14th, 2023 at the Leon’s Centre. The Stewart brothers will see their numbers honoured and raised to the rafters as a tribute to the accomplishments they had as members of the Frontenacs. Read more

U SPORTS Report – 11 OHL alumni to represent Canada at 2023 FISU Games:
The U SPORTS Report keeps tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2023 U SPORTS University Cup. In this week’s edition 11 OHL alumni have been selected to represent Canada at the 2023 FISU Games. Read more

Binnington records 100th win:
Owen Sound Attack alumni Jordan Binnington earned the 100th win of his NHL career on Monday, becoming the sixth goaltender in St. Louis Blues history to earn 100 victories with the club. Binnington reached 100 wins in just 184 games played, becoming the third fastest Blues goaltender to do so. The 29-year-old netminder was originally selected in the third round (88th overall) by the Blues in the 2011 NHL Draft. Binnington played four seasons in the OHL and won a championship with the Attack, recording 86 wins in 157 games played.

Cajan named ECHL Goaltender of the Week:
Kitchener Rangers graduate Pavel Cajan of the Kalamazoo Wings has been named the ECHL Goaltender of the Week. Cajan went 2-0-0 with a 1.42 goals-against average and a save percentage of .963 in two appearances last week. The 20-year-old turned aside 34 shots in a 6-1 win on Wednesday and made 43 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory on Friday. Under contract to Cleveland of the American Hockey League, Cajan has won each of his three appearances with the team this season with a 1.29 goals-against average and a save percentage of .964.
