The Philadelphia Flyers have signed 25-year-old goaltender Eetu Makiniemi to a one-year contract.
Makiniemi was invited to participate in the Flyers’ training camp on a professional tryout.
The one-year deal, worth $775,000, makes it so that if Makiniemi plays 26 NHL games this season, he will qualify as an RFA next summer. If he plays fewer games at the top level, he will go back to being a Group 6 UFA.
The Finnish goalie was previously playing for the San Jose Sharks—primarily with their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda—before getting invited to the Flyers’ camp, where was joined by fellow goalies Sam Ersson, Ivan Fedotov, Carson Bjarnason, and Cal Petersen.
Makiniemi largely impressed fans in his first game in orange and black, a preseason matchup against the Montreal Canadiens. He played the first period before switching out with Petersen, making several big stops to keep the Habs scoreless in what would eventually result in a 5-0 loss for Philadelphia.
