The waiver wire is a mixed bag.
Some teams have claimed players who have gone on to play significant roles with their new organization. Most recently, Gustav Forsling was put on waivers in January 2021, and claimed by the Florida Panthers. The Panthers went to the Stanley Cup Final in the 2022-23 season, and won the Stanley Cup last year.
In no small part due to the contributions of the astute defender.
Yesterday, the Colorado Avalanche put former New Jersey Devils goalie Kaapo Kahkonen on waivers. Today, he was claimed by the Winnipeg Jets.
Kahkonen had only played one game for the Avalanche. He allowed four goals on 20 shots in a loss against the Tampa Bay Lighting on October 30.
Last year, he played six games for the Devils. Despite a 1-4-0 record, he boasted a 2.51 goals against average (GAA) and a .923 save percentage (SV%).
In addition to the Devils, Kahkonen has played for the Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks. He has played 140 games in his career to date. He has a lifetime 3.34 GAA and a .898 SV%.
Kahkonen clearly has the potential to be a starting goaltender in the NHL. Perhaps landing with the Jets will allow him the runway to find his footing and become a dependable backup goalie.
