Golden Knights Prospect Off To Electric Offensive Start To QMJHL Season

by admin

Vegas Golden Knights prospect Mathieu Cataford is off to an electric offensive start to the QMJHL season, leading the league in points and points per game.

Cataford was a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL draft but has continuously improved since he was selected. He finished as the QMJHL MVP with 40 goals and 90 points in 65 games.

After three successful seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads, the 19-year-old was traded to the Rimouski Oceanic and has been on a tear to start the young season. The Oceanic will be hosting the Memorial Cup meaning that they are guaranteed a spot in the tournament whether they win the QMJHL championship or not.

To start the season, Cataford has notched seven goals and 21 points in just nine games. His 21 points are tied for the league lead with Quebec Remparts’ Justin Cote and his 2.33 points per game is 0.53 points higher than the next best player.

Cataford has not only impressed the Golden Knights’ organization but has made a name for himself with Hockey Canada. He was invited to Team Canada’s 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase in the offseason and his strong play to start the year has increased his odds of making Canada’s squad at the 2025 World Juniors.

Due to the Oceanic playing in the Memorial Cup, Cataford likely won’t get the opportunity to play with the Henderson Silver Knights at the end of the season like he did last year. He played in four AHL games where he recorded two assists.

Following this season Cataford will have the opportunity to attempt to make the Golden Knights roster out of camp but will likely spend the season with Silver Knights.

His excellent start to the season is a testament to the hard work he’s put into his development and the hunger to improve.
