Niagara IceDogs defenceman Urban Podrekar has been named to Slovenia’s Under-20 team as they get set to participate at the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division 1, Group B tournament that runs from December 11th to December 17th.
The native of Kranj, Slovenia will get the opportunity to compete for his country, on home soil, as the tournament is being hosted in Bled, Slovenia which is just minutes away from Podrekar’s hometown. The 18 year-old defenceman was drafted fourth overall in the 2023 CHL Import draft and has recorded seven points (1-6–7) in 26 games so far this season. He scored his first OHL goal in Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Peterborough Petes.
“It was nice to score my first goal right before I left for Slovenia, it definitely felt good,” mentioned Podrekar.
Podrekar and team Slovenia will take on Ukraine, Italy, Poland, Estonia and Croatia as they look to gain promotion to Division 1, Group A, the division below the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship that features the likes of Canada and the USA.
