The New York Islanders announced on Friday that Stanley Cup champion defenseman Brent Sutter will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.
He will also usher in a new era for the exclusive group, as the team announced plans for a Ring of Honor ahead of his induction:
The Islanders Hall of Fame, established in 1992, is a brotherhood of alumni whose notable contributions have led to the success of the team and whose leadership has had a meaningful impact both on and off the ice.

The Islanders Hall of Fame has since received a new home on the UBS Arena concourse, but it has also been long confined to the rafters on a banner featuring the names of the 15 previous inductees.
The Islanders’ new platform to honor their legends will follow in the footsteps of a pair of NHL teams, most notably the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks’ Ring of Honour was founded in 2010, with four players enshrined in its first season. Since its inception, a grand total of eight players have been inducted to its ranks, including goaltender Roberto Luongo, forward Alex Burrows and defenseman Mattis Ohlund as its most recent additions.
Moving closer to Long Island, the New Jersey Devils are in the process of the building one of their own. In addition to the five franchise’s retired numbers, the team has honored former owner John J. McMullen and defenseman Sergei Brylin.
A third member is set to join the group in January.
Official details of where the dedication will be is to be announced, but the team has confirmed it will be in the arena’s seating bowl.
Sutter will officially be enshrined on Jan. 18 ahead of the Islanders’ game against the San Jose Sharks.
