The competition is heating up as the 2022-23 OHL season is into the second half! Here’s what’s happening across the League heading into another weekend of action.

Rangers host Generals on TSN Friday night:
OHL action comes to TSN for the first time this season on Friday in Kitchener as the Oshawa Generals visit the Rangers in their first meeting of the season. Victor Findlay provides the play-by-play call alongside colour voice and OHL alumnus Marc Methot when the puck drops at 7:30pm. Watch from coast-to-coast across the TSN network.

Colts host Firebirds in CHL TV Game of the Week on Thursday:

Paul Ludwinski named Frontenacs captain:
The Kingston Frontenacs have announced that Chicago Blackhawks prospect Paul Ludwinski has been named the new captain for the Frontenacs; with Alec Bélanger, Ben Roger, Maddox Callens, Quinton Burns and Tommy Budnick serving as alternate captains. Read more

Hardie and Callaghan named Steelheads captains:
The Mississauga Steelheads have announced their new leadership group for the remainder of the 2022-23 season, which includes co-captains James Hardie and Charlie Callaghan, and assistant captain Chas Sharpe. Hardie will wear the “C” for home games and Callaghan will be the captain for away games. Read more

Otters unveil 2023 Black History logo and jersey:
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Erie Otters will take the ice for pregame in a jersey inspired by Black history, culture, and excellence. The jersey & logo were fully conceptualized and designed by influential Black artist in the hockey community, Jordan Dabney. Read more

Wolves to host Italian night on Friday:
The Sudbury Wolves are set to host their Italian night on Friday.The Caruso Club will be on hand with great prizes and coupon and two lucky fans will win a family dinner special. The Caruso Club will also be selling individual bags of their delicious crostoli in the lower lobby.

Frontenacs to honour Anthony and Chris Stewart on Saturday:
The Kingston Frontenacs are set to honour Anthony and Chris Stewart during the team’s game on Saturday. The Stewart brothers will see their numbers honoured and raised to the rafters as a tribute to the accomplishments they had as members of the Frontenacs. Read more

Cassidy, DeBoer named NHL All-Star Game coaches:
A pair of former OHL coaches are heading to the 2023 NHL All-Star Game in South Florida. Dallas Stars head coach Peter DeBoer and Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy have been selected for the big game, guiding their respective clubs to success in the opening half of the season. DeBoer is a former two-time OHL Coach of the Year who has hoisted the J. Ross Robertson Cup four different times, once as a player with the Windsor Spitfires and three more as a coach. Known more for his OHL contributions on the ice as a member of the Ottawa 67’s, Bruce Cassidy coached the Kingston Frontenacs over parts of two seasons from 2006-08. Cassidy remains one of the all-time greats in Ottawa 67’s history, playing parts of three seasons in the nation’s capital from 1982-85.

Timmins scores first NHL goal:
OHL graduate Conor Timmins scored his first career NHL goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday. The 24-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont. found the back of the net in a 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Acquired from the Arizona Coyotes earlier this season, Timmins has 10 points (1-9–10) through 13 games with Toronto. The right-shot blueliner played three seasons with the Soo Greyhounds from 2015-18, helping them win a Western Conference title in his final season. He was a second round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Konecny joins elite company:
Former Ottawa 67’s and Sarnia Sting forward Travis Konecny joined an elite class on Wednesday night, joining Marc Recchi, Bobby Clarke and Rick MacLeish to become the fourth player in Philadelphia Flyers history to score a power play goal, shorthanded goal and even strength goal in a single game. Konecny’s second career hat trick brought him to 24 goals on the season, a career best he previously hit in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20. The 25-year-old from Clachan, Ont. is in the midst of a 10-game point streak. He played four seasons in the OHL, racking up 239 points (85-154–239) in 183 games after being the first overall pick of the 2013 OHL Priority Selection. Konecny is in his seventh season with Philadelphia.

Nine OHL graduates named to AHL All-Star Game:
The rosters are out, and nine OHL graduates are headed to the 2023 AHL All-Star Classic from February 5-6 in Laval, Quebec. Former OHL performers include Will Cuylle, Tyson Foerster, Darren Raddysh, Noel Hoefenmayer, Nico Daws, Brian Lashoff, Declan Chisholm, Thomas Harley and Seth Griffith.  Sgarbossa plays 500th AHL game:
Former Sudbury Wolves forward Michael Sgarbossa played his 500th career AHL contest on Wednesday. The 30-year-old from Campbellville, Ont. was a standout over four seasons in the OHL from 2008-12, splitting his career between the Barrie Colts, Saginaw Spirit and the Wolves. He’s amassed 364 points (143-221–364) in his AHL career thus far between the Lake Erie Monsters, Norfolk Admirals, San Diego Gulls, Manitoba Moose and Hershey Bears.

Knights announce 2023 Don Brankley Hall of Fame Class:
The London Knights will usher three names into the Don Brankley Hall of Fame on February 8th when they play host to the Kitchener Rangers. Don Maloney, Rick Green and current Kitchener Rangers assistant coach Dennis Wideman have been identified as this year’s inductees. For more on their careers, visit londonknights.com.
