Petes visit Storm on TSN Friday night:
The Oshawa Generals came away victorious on the first CHL on TSN broadcast of the season last Friday in Kitchener, and now the Peterborough Petes will take a shot, going into Guelph on Friday to take on the Storm. Friday night’s broadcast can be seen across the country on TSN 3 as Victor Findlay and Marc Methot provide the call on a cross-conference matchup that begins at 7:30pm.

Petes, Attack go head-to-head in CHL TV Game of the Week:
The Peterborough Petes will be featured once again on Saturday, squaring off with the host Owen Sound Attack at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in the CHL TV Game of the Week. Tune in to the game absolutely free by visiting ohllive.com and creating a free account! Saturday’s game gets underway at 6:45pm.

55 OHL players included in NHL Central Scouting’s midseason rankings:
 55 OHL players have been included on NHL Central Scouting’s Midseason Rankings for the 2023 NHL Draft scheduled to take place June 28-29 in Nashville, Tennessee. Read more

Wolves’ Alex Pharand added to 2023 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game:
Sudbury Wolves forward Alex Pharand has been added to the 2023 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game set to take place on Wednesday, January 25 in Langley, BC. Pharand will replace injured Wolves teammate Quentin Musty in the game, suiting up for Team Red. Read more

A few defencemen show tremendous patience with the puck in the latest edition of OHL Plays of the Week, with appearances from Saginaw’s PJ Forgione and Hunter Haight, Sault Ste. Petes’ Zanetti signs pro deal in Switzerland starting in 2023-24:
Peterborough Petes blueliner and Philadelphia Flyers draft pick Brian Zanetti has signed a two-year contract with the Swiss National League’s SCL Tigers starting in 2023-24. The 19-year-old defenceman has five points (2-3—5) in 27 games for the Petes this season. He represented Switzerland at the World Juniors. Read more at gopetesgo.com

 

COMMUNITY CORNER:

Attack raise nearly $50,000 through Hockey Fights Cancer night:
Back on November 5th, the Owen Sound Attack teamed up with the local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society for their annual Hockey Fights Cancer game night. As they event is geared toward raising both funds and awareness to help people living with cancer, the Attack and the HFC Committee are proud to announce that the grand total raised for the 22/23 season is $48,795.75. Bell Let’s Talk across the League:
Bell Lets Talk Day is coming up on January 25th. Teams across the League will be taking on the stigma surrounding mental health in their annual Bell Let’s Talk Games starting with North Bay on Thursday, as well as Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury on Friday. Visit team websites for more information.

Attack to host Hockey Day in Canada Saturday and Sunday:
The Owen Sound Attack are set to host Hockey Day in Canada this weekend as they take on the Peterborough Petes on Saturday, followed by the Ottawa 67’s on Sunday. Ron MacLean will host the Hockey Day in Canada festivities live from Owen Sound throughout the day-long national broadcast, featuring all seven Canadian NHL teams in action. Festivities will begin in Owen Sound on January 18th, featuring grassroots hockey events featuring NHL alumni and the Stanley Cup, and an outdoor hockey festival. Read more

Troops fans rally in support of community:
North Bay Battalion fans continue to support the community at Troops home games. Last week, fans helped raise a little over $500 for Willie Cowie, a long-time volunteer with North Bay Minor Hockey. Cowie has volunteered for over 30 years with minor hockey and just lost part of his leg due to diabetes. Money raised will help retrofit his home. Battalion fans also recently raised 1,175Ibs. of food and hygiene products in support of the North Bay Food Bank. Fans also contributed $1,055 in cash donations.

 

ALUMNI NOTES:

Wolves to retire Staal’s #14 on February 3rd:
The Sudbury Wolves announced this past week that, as part of their 50th anniversary season, they’ll be retiring Marc Staal’s number 14 on Friday, February 3rd when they take on the Mississauga Steelheads. Now 36-years-old, Staal is a former two-time World Junior gold medalist who was voted OHL Defenceman of the Year in 2007, earning the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as OHL Playoff MVP as the Wolves fell to the Plymouth Whalers in the Championship Series. Staal has gone on to play in over 1,000 NHL games, and has appeared in 46 games with the Florida Panthers this season. One of four brothers to play in the OHL, Staal and his family will join the Wolves for a special pre-game ceremony to celebrate his achievements. Read more at sudburywolves.com

Frontenacs honour Anthony and Chris Stewart:
The Kingston Frontenacs honoured alumni Anthony (2001-05) and Chris (2004-07) Stewart prior to puck drop on Saturday night, raising #13 and #24 to the heights of the Leon’s Centre. Watch

Knights announce 2023 Don Brankley Hall of Fame induction class:
The London Knights are proud to announce the class of 2023 to the Don Brankley Hall of Fame as Dan Maloney, Rick Green, and Dennis Wideman will be honoured at the February 8 home game against the visiting Kitchener Rangers with a special pre-game media press conference and ceremony. Read more

Stamkos scores 500th NHL goal:
Former Sarnia Sting forward Steven Stamkos netted his 500th NHL career goal on Wednesday, part of a three-goal performance to help the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-2. The 32-year-old is just the third active skater to reach the 500-goal milestone. Stamkos has recorded 1,024 points (502-522–1,024) through his 995 games played with the Lightning. He is a two-time Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner as the NHL’s leading goal-scorer (2010 and 2012). The Marhkam, Ont. native  spent two seasons with the Sarnia Sting, recording 197 points (100-97-197) over 124 OHL career games.

Gruden makes NHL debut:
Another former London Knight has made his way into the NHL. Jonathan Gruden made his debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, skating 7:02 in a 4-3 overtime win over the Anaheim Ducks. Gruden spent the 2019-20 season in London, recording 30 goals, 36 assists and 66 points in 59 games with a plus/minus rating of plus-20. The son of former Flint Firebirds and Hamilton Bulldogs head coach John Gruden who now serves as an assistant coach with the Boston Bruins, Gruden was originally a fourth round pick of the Ottawa Senators in the 2018 NHL Draft before being dealt to Pittsburgh in exchange for goaltender Matt Murray in October 2020. Read more

Hoefenmayer coming along down Leafs’ development path:
Recently selected to compete in the upcoming AHL All-Star Classic, Toronto Marlies defenceman Noel Hoefenmayer is coming along nicely in his development. Originally signed to an AHL contract after being named OHL and CHL Defenceman of the Year in 2020, the 24-year-old is having great success in the AHL, recording 10 goals, 19 assists and 29 points in 34 games. Pro grind not slowing down rookie Cuylle
Captain of the 2022 Western Conference champion Windsor Spitfires Will Cuylle is proving a good fit in the pro game with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. The 20-year-old was a second team OHL all-star last season, helping Canada win gold at the 2022 World Juniors in August. The big winger has put up 11 goals, seven assists and 18 points in 36 games with Hartford this season after being selected by the New York Rangers in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft. OHL grads Felhaber, Santos compete in ECHL All-Star Game:
A pair of OHL graduates competed in the 2023 ECHL All-Star Classic on Monday January 16th in Norfolk, Virginia. Former Ottawa 67’s and Saginaw Spirit forward Tye Felhaber of the Fort Wayne Komets suited up for the Western Conference, while former North Bay Battalion forward Mathew Santos of the Maine Mariners competed for the Eastern Conference. U SPORTS Report – OHL grads remain undefeated at 2023 FISU World University Games:
The U SPORTS Report keeps tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2023 U SPORTS University Cup. In this week’s edition the 2023 FISU Games taking place in Lake Placid, NY. are underway as 11 OHL alumni are representing the Maple Leaf in men’s hockey. Read more

Raaymakers named U SPORTS men’s hockey athlete of the week:
STFX X-men’s Joseph Raaymakers has been named the U SPORTS hockey player of the week. Raaymakers turned aside 75 of 78 shots faced last week, posting a 2-0 record. The Chatham, Ont. native made 42 saves in a 4-0 blanking of Moncton, before stopping 33 of the 36 shots he faced in a 4-3 overtime win over the UNB Reds. He finished the week with a 1.50 goals against average and .962 save percentage. Raaymakers spent five seasons in the OHL, splitting his career between the Soo Greyhounds and London Knights.
