Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that 2023 NHL Draft prospect Denver Barkey of the London Knights is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week with five points including three goals and two assists in two games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4.
Helping London skate to a 4-1 series win over the Kitchener Rangers last week, Barkey started the week with a goal and pair of helpers in a 5-0 shutout win on Tuesday night. Barkey went on to pick-up first star honours on Thursday, punching London’s ticket to the Western Conference Championship Series with a pair of goals in a 4-0 win over the Rangers.
A 17-year-old from Newmarket, Ont., Barkey finished the regular season with 59 points including 22 goals and 37 assists over 61 games, leading the Knights with five game-winning goals. Barkey has 13 points (6-7-13) through nine playoff outings. The 5-foot-9, 154lb. forward recorded 15 points in his rookie season, scoring seven goals and eight assists last year. A former first round (16th overall) pick of the Knights in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, Barkey attended the CHL Top Prospects game back in January. He was NHL Central Scouting’s 79th-ranked North American skater on their final rankings for the 2023 NHL Draft released last week.
Also considered for the award this week, Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov put up five points (2-3–5) in three games for the North Bay Battalion while fellow teammate and Seattle Kraken prospect Ty Nelson also had success, recording one goal, four assists and five points as the Troops continue to battle for their spot in the Eastern Conference Championship Series.
