Matt Coronato was the hero with two goals, one the overtime winner, as the Calgary Flames defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Tuesday night. He had three shots in 16:35 and was the player of the game for the Flames.
When asked about the goals, Coronato said on the first one that he picked up a puck that was won in a battle and found the net. In overtime, he got the puck off the faceoff, drove in down the wing, and sniped a great shot past Sam Monteambeault, the first of the overtime, to win it. It was the fastest overtime goal in franchise history.
To say the Canadiens let that one slip away might be an understatement, but credit to the Flames who didn’t go away after Montreal scored on a shorthanded goal to go up 2-1.
Coronato got his third and fourth goals of the season. The storyline that Coronato just returned from a demotion to the AHL makes the two goals only that much sweeter.
The Flames needed a win going into the game and head coach Ryan Huska shuffled the lines. It worked. The Flames outshot the Habs 35-23. They also outhit the Canadiens by a margin of 29-25.
Connor Zary also scored for the Flames to snap a nine-game goalless streak. Dustin Wolf picked up the win, stopping 21 of 23 shots.
Unfortunately, not all the news was good. Forward Anthony Matha left the game in the first period after taking a hit. It didn’t look like much, but Mantha left the game and the Flames announced on social media he wouldn’t return. There hasn’t been an update on his condition yet.
