Halloween is right around the corner, and OHL teams are preparing for some spooky fun at the rinks this weekend! Here’s what’s happening across the League.

47 OHL players included on NHL Central Scouting Players to Watch list for October:
A total of 47 OHL players have been included on NHL Central Scouting’s October ‘Players to Watch’ List for the 2023 NHL Draft scheduled to take place June 28-29 in Nashville, Tennessee. READ

Spitfires and 67’s make Week 4 edition of Kia CHL Top 10:
After Week 4 action, the Windsor Spitfires and Ottawa 67’s find themselves in the Week 4 edition of the Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings. WATCH

Steelheads’ Beck named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week:
Montreal Canadiens prospect Owen Beck of the Mississauga Steelheads is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording three goals, six assists and nine points in two games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-2. READ

67’s MacKenzie named OHL Goaltender of the Week:
Collin MacKenzie of the Ottawa 67’s is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with two victories, a 0.60 goals-against average and a .976 save percentage. READ

Rookie sensation Michael Misa off to a hot start in Saginaw:
Just 10 games into Misa’s first season in the OHL, the sixth player in OHL history to be granted exceptional status by Hockey Canada has lived up to the hype. The first overall pick is currently tied for the league lead in goals with eight, and sits fifth in overall scoring with 14 points. READ

Generals broadcast voice Mike Luck makes his way to the NHL:
Known as the voice of the Oshawa Generals, Mike “Lucky” Luck has made his way to the NHL on Sportsnet’s broadcast team, as he gears up to call games on a more regular basis this season with the Ottawa Senators and Winnipeg Jets, including assignments on Hockey Night in Canada. READ

Karsen Chartier commits to Sting:
The Sarnia Sting announced the signing of 6’2” left-catching goaltender Karsen Chartier to an Ontario Hockey League Standard Player Agreement.  READ

Evan Passmore commits to Colts:
The Barrie Colts announced the signing of 2022 eighth round OHL Priority Selection choice Evan Passmore. The 6-foot-2, 174Ib. defenceman comes from the Waterloo Wolves U18 program. READ

Wolves hit the road with new wheels:
The Sudbury Wolves were excited to hit the road in their newly wrapped bus for the first time this season. READ

Sting add three to Hockey Operations Department:
The Sarnia Sting have announced the additions of Michigan scout Steve Shafer, Strength and Conditioning coach Tyson Slack and Assistant Equipment Manager Darren Smale to the club’s hockey operations department. READ

Forsyth rejoins Wolves scouting staff:
The Sudbury Wolves have announced that Jeff Forsyth has rejoined the club in the role of U18 Scout and Player Liaison. READ

Knights prospect O’Reilly leads GOJHL rookie scoring:
London Knights 2022 second round OHL Priority Selection choice Sam O’Reilly leads rookie scoring in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. The London Nationals forward has 25 points (12-13–25) through 14 games this season. O’Reilly committed to the Knights back in May. Hamilton Bulldogs prospect Daniel Vasic of the Thorold Blackhawks trails close behind with 20 points (13-7–20).

Hounds prospect Miller named to NOJHL three stars of the week:
Soo Greyhounds second round 2022 OHL Priority Selection choice Landon Miller is included in the NOJHL three stars of the week, going 2-0 with a shootout and overtime victory for the Soo Thunderbirds. Miller has played to a record of 5-0-0-1 this season, boasting a goals-against average of 1.93 and a save percentage of .937. Miller committed to the Greyhounds in July.

 

COMMUNITY CORNER:

Hounds coach John Dean raises funds for Big Brother Big Sister of Sault Ste. Marie:
The Soo Greyhounds Head Coach John Dean took part in Big Brothers Big Sisters “Big Bail Out” event in support of raising funds for the organization. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides boys and girls with a positive adult role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with. READ

Halloween fun across the League:
It’s getting spooky this weekend as teams across the League get ready to celebrate Halloween! Festivities begin in Peterborough on Thursday with the Petes, followed by more seasonal fun with the Oshawa Generals, Kingston Frontenacs, Kitchener Rangers, Niagara IceDogs, Erie Otters, Saginaw Spirit, Hamilton Bulldogs, Barrie Colts, Flint Firebirds, Guelph Storm and Ottawa 67’s. Storm to host sixth annual Winter wear Drive on Friday:
The Guelph Storm will be hosting their sixth annual Winter Wear Drive in support of Hope House this Friday. Volunteers will be on hand to collect your much needed gently used or new hats, coats, boots, mitts, and scarves, in support of Hope House, which is a non-profit organization helping to overcome poverty in the Guelph area. Otters to host annual Sock Toss on Saturday and Family Sunday Funday:
The Erie Otters will be hosting their 2nd Annual Sock Toss during their Halloween game this Saturday, benefiting the Erie City Mission and local shelters. Be sure to bring your socks Saturday to help change the life of someone in need. The Erie Otters will also be hosting Family Sunday Funday, where the first 500 kids will receive a voucher for popcorn and a drink. The Sanderson Sisters, face painter and balloon sculptor will be there and fans will be able to meet the players after the game while trick or treating in the concourse.

Firebirds to host First Responders night on Saturday:
The Flint Firebirds will be hosting their First Responders night on Saturday, where all first responders will be able to attend the game free! A Battle of the Badges Game (Police vs. Fire) will be played from 4-5 p.m. prior to the Firebirds game. There will also be a Touch-a-Truck event held from 5:30-6:45 in the main parking lot where adults & children will be able to interact with local police, fire & EMS.

Spirit to host Pink Out game on Sunday:
The Saginaw Spirit will be hosting their Pink Out game on Sunday in support of Ascension St Mary’s, where jerseys will be up for auction post-game. There will also be a light-up wand giveaway at the game!

 

ALUMNI NOTES:

217 OHL alumni on U SPORTS men’s hockey rosters to open 2022-2023 season:
The U SPORTS men’s hockey season is well underway, with a total of 217 OHL alumni on rosters across the country. That figure includes a total of 33 alumni that graduated following the conclusion of the 2021-22 season. READ

Blackwood named NHL’s third star of the week:
Barrie Colts graduate Mackenzie Blackwood played to a 3-0 mark with a 1.33 goals-against average and .932 save percentage for the New Jersey Devils last week. The 25-year-old was a second-round pick, 42nd overall, by the Devils in the 2015 NHL Draft and is playing in his fifth NHL season, He improved his career record to 58-52-16 in 134 appearances with a 2.91 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.

Payne a part of hockey history on Wednesday:
Former London Knights and Barrie Colts forward Jason Payne entered the hockey history books on Wednesday. The Cincinnati Cyclones head coach joined Kalamazoo Wings counterpart Joel Martin in becoming the first pair of Black coaches to oppose each other in a North American professional game. Payne, who played 13 seasons professionally, has been on the bench in Cincinnati since 2018-19, becoming the club’s head coach to begin the 2021-22 season. A former goaltender who played three seasons in the Western Hockey League from 2000-03, Joel Martin is in his first season as head coach of the Kalamazoo Wings. Read the full story at NHL.com

Chaulk slow cookin’ in Condorstown:
Kingston Frontenacs alumnus Colin Chaulk was thrust into his first AHL head coaching role last season and he’s now settled in with the Bakersfield Condors, AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers. Chaulk, who played in Kingston from 1994-98, went on to a lengthy pro career before spending several seasons between assistant and head coaching assignments in both the IHL and ECHL. Maksimovich named U SPORTS Hockey Player of the Week:
University of Prince Edward Island Panthers forward Kyle Maksimovich is the U SPORTS Men’s Hockey Player of the Week, putting up a hat trick and three assists in a pair of victories last week. The Hamilton, Ont. native is in his third year of a Bachelor of Science degree at UPEI after playing five OHL seasons between Erie and Ottawa from 2014-19. Maksimovich was an OHL champion with Erie in 2017, and reached the OHL Championship Series as a member of the 67’s in 2018-19. Read more at USPORTS.ca
